In 1979, two parents set out on a mission to ensure that when they passed, their two sons would have everything they would need to succeed in life. They wanted the boys to have opportunities for self-determination, be challenged and rewarded for their efforts in life, and be part of the community that they lived in. These were not guarantees granted to them, as both boys lived with developmental disabilities. Fred and Judy Fleischer were prominent advocates for their two sons.

Services for people living with disabilities at that time were complex and difficult to obtain. Not finding what they needed and not wanting their boys to be lost or without a family, after they had passed, they decided to take matters into their own hands. They gathered other prominent leaders in the disability community in Toledo and shared their plans. Together, they broke ground on what many would call a new home, Manahan—a caring home that would help those living with disabilities thrive and foster personal and community growth.

 

For over 45 years, Manahan, born from the humble, noble mission that the Fleischer's strived to accomplish for their sons, has been called home to many families looking for a caring environment for their loved ones living with a disability. As an organization, we take pride in our mission and honor the legacy of our founders and all the individuals who have lived, past, present, and in the future, at Manahan. We want others to know that we are a place to grow.

Nestled on 10 picturesque acres of tranquil land, our facility provides a welcoming and enriching environment for the individuals we serve. With two residential homes, a dedicated administrative building, and our vibrant Activities & Education center, we create opportunities for both the adults who call 120 S. Holland-Sylvania Rd. home and the broader community.
